Let me introduce myself...

Having recently joined Never Forget Marketing, I have been asked to introduce myself.

Now some might relish the opportunity to speak about themselves, at length - others not so much. You can make your own mind up on which category I fall into after reading this.

I was born and raised in Limerick, Ireland (yes that’s in the southern part). I studied English and History in College, always with the goal of becoming a secondary school teacher. I was fortunate enough to get accepted at Trinity College Dublin for my Postgraduate Degree in Education. My mum cried when I was accepted so I feel obligated to mention it. Hi mum.

Teaching in Ireland is a very decent job and since nobody wanted to step aside, I had to depend on trusty ol’ Ryanair for a reasonably priced seat - without priority boarding - to get working. I landed in a village in Surrey, with a population of about four people and a cat. This wasn’t too great a culture shock thankfully.

I gained experience in a number of schools before settling at a Catholic School. It had enough touches from home and parallels with schools in Ireland to help me settle.

I was an English teacher, form tutor, pastoral lead, Head of Year and very much enjoyed my time there. I saw it all.

Teaching is a real rollercoaster. You can have days where you question all your decisions leading up to joining the profession and likewise, you can jump out of the school and skip down the road feeling like Leo in Titanic - the highs and lows are equally extreme.

I’ve often missed home but I’ve set up a base here in Essex. In 2016 I was blessed with the arrival of the King of the Dinosaurs - my boy Christopher. The Mess-Maker Extraordinaire, his sister Evelynn (yes with two ‘n’s - I’ve doomed her to a life of correcting people), came along in 2018, just in case I was starting to find some free time for myself. They are my two favourite people and have inspired me more than the Power Rangers did in 1993. That’s high praise indeed.

Over the last few years, I’ve found myself drawn more and more to media and marketing. I set up a media curriculum in school, I’ve had a film analysis club and have always spent more than the allocated time looking at and analysing advertisements. I’ve been editing videos and creating posters and loving every minute of it for some time now. This has led me to take the leap of a career change. I couldn’t be more excited about joining Never Forget Marketing.

I don’t consider myself as a person who likes to talk about myself - but it appears I’m well able to write about myself.

As some guy with a hat once said; ‘brevity is the soul of wit,’ so I’ll leave it there for now.

Looking forward to working with you all,

Slán Go Fóill,

James
